Satelitarny operator - New Skies Satellites N.V. z siedzibą w Hadze w Holandii z 16 na 17 kwietnia 2002 roku zamierza umieścić na orbicie przy pomocy rakiety Ariane 4 nowego satelitę NSS-7. Zajmie on miejsce satelitów NSS803 i NSS K na pozycji 21,5W.

NSS podpisał kontrakty na wynajęcie transponderów z dwiema poważnymi firmami telekomunikacyjnymi - norweskim Telenorem i portugalską CPR Marconi (część Portugal Telecom Group). Podpisano także umowę z albańskim operatorem internetowym Albanian Business Communications (ABCom) na wykorzystanie transponderów NSS-7 dla szybkiego Internetu i przekazów IP dla Albanii. Dzięki temu Albania zostanie podłączona do bezpośredniego łącza internetowego w Waszyngtonie (wcześniej przez NSS K).

Portugal Telecom Group będzie korzystać z transponderów NSS-7 dla obsługi telefonii między Azorami i Portugalią.

Telenor, to nowy klient NSS, który zamierza stworzyć sieć VSAT w krajach Ameryki Łacińskiej i Afryki. Dlatego Telenor postawił 16 metrową antenę w Nittedal Earth Station na północ od Oslo.

Satelita NSS-7 ma 36 transponderów w paśmie Ku i 36 w paśmie C. Zajmie pozycję roboczą 21,5W.

Lot numer 150 rakiety Ariane 4 ma odbyć się z kosmodromu Kourou w Gujanie Francuskiej w godzinach 22:53-00:14 (GMT) w nocy z 16 na 17 kwietnia. NSS ma w przygotowaniu dwa kolejne satelity przeznaczone głównie dla Azji i Ameryki. NSS oprócz biura w Hadze ma filie w Londynie, Johannesburgu, New Delhi, Sao Paulo, Singapurze, Sydney i Waszyngtonie.

Telenor is a new customer that will create a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) network for the delivery of fixed data and telephony services throughout Africa and Latin America. To establish the new VSAT network, Telenor will point a 16-meter antenna, located at their Nittedal Earth Station north of Oslo, at New Skies' 338.5 degrees East orbital position.

Using New Skies' IPsys(R) Internet services and NSS-7's high-power Ku-band coverage beams, ABCom will link directly into the U.S. Internet backbone through New Skies' Washington Mediaport. The service has already begun on the NSS-K satellite.

The NSS-7 design is based on Lockheed Martin's A2100AX platform and boasts a communications payload consisting of nearly 3,500 MHz of capacity. The bandwidth is spread over 36 C-band and 36 Ku-band transponders in 11 high-powered coverage beams, which are focused on key developed and emerging markets throughout the Americas, Europe and Africa. The extensive switching capability between beams and between frequency bands offers enhanced connectivity between regions and makes it possible to tailor capacity to match current Internet and video traffic patterns in the Atlantic Ocean Region. NSS-7's high downlink power levels also will enable the use of smaller, more efficient receive systems for the delivery of Internet and data services.
