Job cuts expected at Viva

Viva Job cuts are thought to be unavoidable at Viva Media and Viva Polska, the German cable and satellite television operator, following the takeover by US media group Viacom. Simon Guild, the managing director of MTV-Europa, a music channel owned by Viacom, says that job cuts are necessary in view of the poor state of Viva\'s finances and the fact that the company employs around twice as many staff as rival MTV.

However, Mr Guild has dismissed reports that 95 per cent of the 290 staff of Viva are to lose their jobs as absurd. Mr Guild also says that Viva will definitely be maintained in the long term, as it is a strong brand. In future, the company is to return towards its original strategy and is to offer programmes that are aimed at a younger audience and have a stronger local focus than those of MTV.
