2012 Olympics on Freeview in HD only for London

Londoners will be able to watch the 2012 Olympics in HD on DVB-T package - Freeview. Viewers who live in the other areas of the UK will probably see the event only in SD (standard definition).

The digital switchover is scheduled in London for 2011 and should be completed by April 2012 - in time for the Olympic Games.

In 2007 Ofcom announced the launch of three (eventually four) HD channels on Freeview. In preparation for high-definition, BBC plans to upgrade its Freeview service to the MPEG 4 compression. This will allow the service to offer 4 HD and 20 SD channels.

ITV and Channel 4 have also announced to upgrade their signal on Freeview.
